Missed delivery text and spoofed bank call scam led to unauthorized card transactions

Today I've been speaking with a friend who was tricked by the missed delivery text scam. Genuinely awaiting a Hermes delivery, a text message came through requesting delivery be rescheduled and a small fee payable. The link in the text directs to a very convincing "Hermes" Web page where bank card details were entered. Unfortunately that's where the problems started, not ended. Calls from the bank came in, displaying the correct phone number from the bank ... but it was a fraudster. The Victim felt helpless as she saw numerous transactions appearing in front of her and he account balance dwindling to nothing. When challenging the call, the victim was told to check the contact phone number on the back of her card. He assured her that he was from the bank, and they would reissue a new card within five days. Thankfully when the victim made contact with the genuine fraud team, they cancelled her card so no further transactions would go through and she has been refunded. It was altogether a frightening and very anxious incident and although reasonably tech savvy, and not older or vulnerable, she was unaware that caller ID could be spoofed. She was happy for her story to be shared to warn others. It can happen to any of us! Please don't assume everyone knows. Tell those you care about that caller ID does not verify where the call is coming from. And follow the golden rule. NEVER click on a link in an email or text to log in to an account or resolve an issue. Spoofing is real. The impact can be devastating. Report suspicious and scam messages by forwarding them to 7726 (spells SPAM on your ☎️ telephone keypad) If your bank calls, tell them you'll call back on a trusted number. Always wait more than ten seconds between hanging up and dialling out, or use a different phone. #SeeingIsNotNecessarilyBelieving #tell2protectmany #ScamAware #CyberSam
