ixigo & SpiceJet - Unfair Retention of Convenience Fee (₹2,695) & Uncompensated Higher Rebooking Fare Following Airline-Initiated Flight Cancellation

If an airline cancels your flight, who pays for your loss? I booked 5 SpiceJet tickets from Bengaluru to Pune for 21 Nov through ixigo. Total: ₹24,248. SpiceJet cancelled the flight from its side. I got ₹21,553 back. ixigo kept ₹2,695 as a “non-refundable convenience fee”, about ₹539 per passenger. I had to rebook. The new fare for 9 passengers is ₹50,400, or ₹5,600 per person, compared with ₹4,849.60 per person originally. That is ₹750.40 more per person. My loss, for the 5 original passengers:n• Higher fare: ₹3,752n• Fee retained: ₹2,695n• Total: ₹6,447n I did nothing to cause this. I didn’t cancel, change or miss anything. I paid for a flight and never got to travel. ixigo says the fee covered a “booking service already delivered”. But if the trip never happens because of the airline, what was the customer paid-for service? My questions: Is it fair for a booking platform to keep its fee when the airline cancels? Should the platform or the airline bear the cost when passengers must rebook at a higher fare? Shouldn’t there be clear rules on convenience fees for airline-initiatednI have written to ixigo and will use the National Consumer Helpline and AirSewa if needed. I’m sharing this because I suspect many travellers face the same thing and don’t push back. Has this happened to you? Tell me in the comments.
