UClean franchise fee paid for Mumbai territory; no store finalised in 6 months and refund denied

In April, my husband Behzad and I signed up to open a UClean laundry franchise in Mumbai. We paid ₹1.18 lakh. Six months later we have no store and no refund. We signed on 6 April 2026 for Parel / Prabhadevi / Wadala, an area UClean approved in our agreement. The agreement says the store location is to be finalised within 90 days. What followed: → Parel turned out to be already taken. → On 2 May, we were told Prabhadevi falls within the radius of their existing Worli store. → The radius itself kept changing: 3 km, then 2 km, then 1.5 km. → On 9 June, a shop was confirmed in writing as "ok to go". On 15 June, it was rejected for overlapping that same store. That day, UClean's Maharashtra master franchisee wrote to us: "In hindsight, there were gaps from our side — particularly around communication, clarity, and the confusion regarding overlapping territories." He said our refund would be discussed internally. A few days later, the company's legal team refused it, saying the fee is "non-refundable". I'm sharing this so other first-time franchisees can ask the questions we didn't. Before you pay any franchise fee, get these in writing: 1️⃣ A map of your exact territory 2️⃣ The location and radius of every existing store nearby 3️⃣ What happens to your money if no viable location is found Read the fee clause carefully. Ours said "non-refundable" no matter what happened.
